With a little care and some simple repair techniques, you can easily fix minor damages yourself and keep your beloved pieces looking fabulous.
One common issue with swimwear is loose threads or small holes. To repair these, start by trimming any loose threads carefully using sharp scissors. Be cautious not to cut through the fabric itself. If there’s a small hole surrounding the thread, you can mend it discreetly using a needle and matching thread color. Sew around the edges of the hole with small stitches until it’s completely closed.
If you notice a missing button on your swimsuit or beach cover-up, don’t fret; replacing buttons is easy! First, find a replacement button that matches in size and style. Using a needle threaded with suitable thread color (preferably nylon), sew through the existing buttonhole from front to back in an “X” pattern several times for durability. Then attach the new button securely by sewing it onto the garment following its original placement.
Sometimes elastic bands lose their stretch over time or due to excessive wear. If this happens to your bikini bottoms or straps, don’t worry – you can replace them easily too! Start by removing the damaged elastic band carefully using seam rippers or scissors. Measure out an appropriate length of new elastic band (make sure it’s similar in width) needed for replacement based on your garment’s stretch requirements.
To reattach an elastic band on bikini bottoms, fold over the fabric where it was originally attached and secure one end of your new elastic band inside this fold using pins. Stretching slightly as needed, sew along the folded fabric, attaching the elastic band securely. Repeat this process for both sides of the bikini bottoms.
For straps, you can either sew new elastic bands onto the existing attachment points or use a safety pin to thread them through. If sewing, carefully remove any remnants of old straps before sewing on the new ones.
In case your swimwear has lost its vibrant color due to prolonged sun exposure, you can try reviving it with fabric dye specially formulated for swimwear. Follow the instructions on the dye package and ensure proper rinsing afterward to prevent any transfer of color when wet.
