Protect Your Swimsuits This Summer: How to Prevent Damage from Chlorine and Saltwater

Summer is here and it’s time to hit the beach, but before you do, it’s important to be aware of the damaging effects chlorine and saltwater can have on your swimwear. Chlorine is a commonly used chemical in swimming pools, while saltwater is found in oceans and some artificial lagoons. Both substances can cause harm to your swimwear if not taken care of properly.

Chlorine causes discoloration, fading, and deterioration of fabric fibers. It also weakens the elasticity of swimwear over time. Saltwater isn’t as harsh as chlorine; however, it can still cause damage to your swimsuit by causing color loss or bleeding.

To prevent damage from both substances there are a few things you can do:

1. Rinse Your Swimwear: After wearing your swimsuit in either saltwater or chlorine pool water, rinse it thoroughly with fresh water. This will help remove any harmful chemicals that may cling onto the fabric.

2. Hand Wash Only: Avoid machine washing your swimwear as this could cause further damage to its delicate fibers. Instead, hand wash using a mild detergent specifically designed for delicate fabrics like silk or wool.

3. Air Dry: Do not use a dryer when drying your swimsuit after washing. Instead lay flat on a clean towel away from direct sunlight and let air dry naturally.

4. Rotate Your Swimsuits: To ensure maximum longevity of each piece rotate through multiple suits so as not to wear out one suit too quickly from frequent use.

By taking these simple steps you’ll be able to extend the life of your favorite designer swimwear pieces for many summers to come!
