Chlorine Care: How to Keep Your Designer Swimwear and Beachwear Looking Like New

Summer is here, which means it’s time to hit the beach or pool with your favorite designer swimwear and beachwear. But before you dive in, it’s important to know how to care for your swimwear properly. Chlorine is commonly used in swimming pools to keep the water clean, but it can also damage your swimsuit if not treated correctly. In this post, we’ll go through some tips on how to take care of your swimsuits and prevent chlorine damage.

Why Does Chlorine Damage Swimwear?

Chlorine is a powerful chemical that can cause damage over time if not handled properly. When mixed with water, chlorine forms hypochlorous acid, which can break down fibers in fabrics like spandex and elastane – two materials commonly found in swimwear. This breakdown leads to color fading, stretching out of shape, thinning of material leading ultimately leading up to tearing.

How Can You Prevent Chlorine Damage?

Preventing chlorine damage starts by taking proper care of your swimsuits before and after wearing them in chlorinated water. Here are some tips you should follow:

1. Rinse Your Swimsuit Thoroughly Before Entering The Pool

Before jumping into the pool or any other body of water containing chlorine-treated water ensure that you rinse off any saltwater or sunscreen from yourself as well as from the suit using clean freshwater. This will help reduce the amount of chemicals that interact with the fibers inside the fabric.

2. Avoid Long Exposure To Chlorinated Water

The longer you stay submerged in chlorinated water; more significant damage occurs on your swimwear causing rapid wear-and-tear on elastic fibres woven into its fabric composition resulting from constant exposure.

3. Use A High-Quality Swimsuit With Chlorine-Resistant Fabric

Swimwears made up of high-quality materials like Polyester, PBT (polybutylene terephthalate), or Polyamide blends are known for their ability to resist chlorine damage. Chlorine-resistant swimwear can withstand the harsh chemicals present in pools and will last longer compared to other swimsuits.

4. Wash Your Swimsuit Immediately After Use

After a dip in the pool, rinse your suit with cold water and avoid using hot water as it can cause fiber damage. Hand wash your swimsuit using mild laundry detergent that contains no bleach or fabric softeners to prevent color fading and stretching of fibers.

5. Drying Your Swimsuit Properly

Do not wring out any excess water from the suit after washing; instead, use a clean towel to gently blot away moisture. Allow your suit to dry naturally by laying it flat on a towel or drying rack away from sunlight – do not use machine dryers as they tend to shrink/stretch the elastic fibers within fabrics leading up to early wear-and-tear.

What Happens If You Don’t Take Care Of Your Swimwear?

Not taking care of your swimwear properly will eventually lead up damaging them over time through effects such as:

1. Color Fading

Prolonged exposure of chlorinated water causes colors on swimwears made out of synthetic fabrics like spandex, elastane, nylon etc., tends fade gradually changing its original hue into lighter shades.

2. Elasticity Loss

Chlorine breaks down elastic fibers present in swimsuits causing them lose their elasticity resulting in saggy areas around busts or hips making it less comfortable for users ultimately leading up tearing off.

3. Thinning Of Fabric Material

The repeated exposure of chlorine-treated water weakens fibres woven into fabric composition leading up thinning out which makes suits more prone tears and rips when stretched.

Conclusion

Swimwears are an essential part of summer fashion but require proper attention so that you can wear them for a more extended period without the early onset of wear-and-tear. Chlorine-resistant swimwear, proper washing/drying techniques, and less exposure to chlorinated water are just some of the ways you can prevent your designer swimwear and beachwear from getting damaged. By following these tips, you will be able to keep your swimsuit looking like new all season long.
