Surf Wax Colognes: A Hit or a Miss?

Picture yourself on a beautiful beach, the sun is shining, and the waves are calling your name. You’re in your favorite swimwear, looking fabulous and smelling like… surf wax? Yes, you heard that right! Surf wax colognes are now a thing.

In case you’re not familiar with surf wax, it’s a sticky substance used to provide grip on surfboards. It helps surfers maintain their balance while riding the waves. While it may be an essential tool for surfing enthusiasts, who would have thought that someone would try to bottle up its scent and sell it as cologne?

Designer swimwear and beach wear brands seem to think this is a great idea. They’ve jumped on board (pun intended) with this trend by creating their own line of surf wax-inspired fragrances.

The idea behind these colognes is to bring the essence of surfing into everyday life. The scents are designed to remind people of warm summer days spent at the beach with friends and family. But do they really achieve that goal or just make us smell like we haven’t showered in weeks?

Let’s take a closer look at some of these scents:

First up is “Beach Bum” by Surfer Joe’s Colognes. This fragrance claims to capture “the essence of salty ocean air mixed with tropical fruits.” But when I tried it out for myself, all I could smell was a combination of coconut oil and old gym socks.

Next is “Surf Wax” by Endless Summer Scents. This one promises to give off “a fresh aroma reminiscent of hot sand beaches and crashing waves.” Unfortunately, what I got from this cologne was more akin to cheap air freshener than anything resembling nature.

And finally, there’s “Riptide” by Saltwater Scents which boasts notes of vanilla bean, ambergris, and sea salt spray – sounds enticing right? Wrong! Once again, I was left feeling disappointed as I choked on the overpowering scent of vanilla.

Although these surf wax-inspired colognes may have a dedicated fan base, they’re not for everyone. The scents can be too strong and overwhelming, leaving you smelling like a melting candle rather than a surfer dude or dudette.

But, to be fair, not all surf wax colognes are created equal. Some brands have managed to capture the essence of surfing in their fragrances without going overboard (pun intended again).

Take for example “Saltwater” by Pacifica which offers an understated yet refreshing scent that reminds me of being at the beach without having to smell like it 24/7. It’s perfect for those days when you want to feel refreshed but not necessarily make a statement with your fragrance.

Another one worth mentioning is “Coral Reef” by Sol de Janeiro which features notes of coconut water and sea salt – both refreshing and invigorating while still remaining subtle enough not to overwhelm your senses.

So what’s the verdict? Are surf wax colognes worth trying out or should we stick with our traditional perfumes and aftershaves?

Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. If you’re someone who loves everything about surfing and wants to embody that spirit in every aspect of your life (including your fragrance), then go ahead and give these colognes a try! But if strong scents aren’t really your thing or if you prefer more subtle fragrances, then maybe it’s best to steer clear of this trend.

In conclusion, while I appreciate the effort made by designer swimwear and beach wear brands in bringing something new and unique into the market, I don’t think surf wax colognes will become my go-to scent anytime soon. But hey – maybe they’ll work better for others!

At least now we know that there’s more than one way to smell like a surfer. Whether it’s through cologne, surf wax or just simply being at the beach, there are plenty of ways to embody that laid-back lifestyle we all know and love.
