To gain more insight into this trend and its popularity, we spoke with three industry experts from designer swimwear and beachwear brands.

Our panelists are Lisa Vogel, the Creative Director of Luxe by Lisa Vogel; Amber Delecce-Forge, the Founder of Montce Swim; and Coralie Charriol Paul, the Founder of C&C Swim.

Q: What inspired you to incorporate mesh panels into your swimwear designs?

Lisa Vogel: For me personally, I love playing with different fabrics when designing my collections. Mesh is such an interesting fabric because it adds dimension and texture to a garment without being too heavy or bulky. Incorporating mesh panels into our swimsuits allows us to create unique pieces that stand out from traditional designs.

Amber Delecce-Forge: When I started Montce Swim in 2009, I wanted to create something different than what was already on the market. At the time, most swimsuits were made from basic nylon/spandex materials without much detail or embellishment. Mesh was a fabric that intrigued me because it added a new level of texture and interest while still allowing for stretch and comfort.

Coralie Charriol Paul: Our brand focuses on creating pieces that are both functional and fashionable. We found that adding mesh panels not only created visual interest but also helped with breathability during hot summer days at the beach or pool.

Q: How do you decide where to place mesh panels in your designs?

Lisa Vogel: It really depends on the specific design we’re working on. Sometimes we’ll add mesh panels to the sides of a one-piece to create a slimming effect, or we’ll incorporate mesh into the neckline or back of a bikini top for added detail. We also like to use mesh in unexpected places, such as on the sleeves of a rashguard.

Amber Delecce-Forge: Placement is key when it comes to incorporating mesh into swimwear designs. We often add mesh panels to areas that are typically covered by fabric, such as under the bust or along the hips. This adds an element of surprise and sexiness without being too revealing.

Coralie Charriol Paul: Our focus is always on functionality first, so we look for ways to incorporate mesh that will enhance the wearability of our swimsuits. For example, adding mesh panels around the waistband can help with breathability and comfort during hot summer days.

Q: What challenges have you faced when working with mesh in swimwear designs?

Lisa Vogel: One challenge we’ve faced is finding high-quality mesh fabrics that are durable enough for swimwear. Mesh can be delicate and prone to snags or tears if not made from quality materials.

Amber Delecce-Forge: Another challenge is ensuring that the placement of the mesh panels maintains modesty while still creating visual interest. It’s important to strike a balance between fashion and function.

Coralie Charriol Paul: We’ve also had some difficulty finding colors that match well with our other fabrics since certain dyes don’t adhere well to synthetic fibers like polyester which most meshes are made from.

Q: How do you see this trend evolving in future swimwear collections?

Lisa Vogel: I think we’ll continue to see more creative uses of mesh in upcoming collections – perhaps even using different types of meshes beyond what’s traditionally used in swimwear design. There’s so much potential when it comes to playing with texture and dimension!

Amber Delecce-Forge: I agree, there’s still so much room for innovation when it comes to incorporating mesh into swimwear. We’ll also continue to experiment with different colors and patterns within the mesh fabric.

Coralie Charriol Paul: As sustainability continues to be a focus in the fashion industry, we’re exploring ways to incorporate eco-friendly meshes into our designs. This could include using recycled materials or natural fibers like cotton.
